A national test of Australia’s newest tool in emergency response will be held tomorrow on Monday 27 July 2026.
At 1:30pm ACST, Territorians and visitors to the NT will receive an AusAlert test to their mobile devices.
AusAlert is a new national emergency warning system that will replace the aging Emergency Alert text messaging tool.
The technology uses cell-broadcast capability to send urgent emergency warnings to compatible mobile phones, tablets and smart devices located within a defined geographic area.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is leading the rollout of AusAlert on behalf of the Australian Government with the support of all jurisdictions including the Northern Territory. AusAlert is being introduced following recommendations from the 2020 Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements.
The test message will trigger a loud siren-like sound and vibration lasting approximately 10 seconds on compatible devices.
The trial forms part of a national testing program before AusAlert becomes operational nationally.
“After the wet season we just experienced, we can really see the value in adding AusAlert to the suite of emergency messages,” said Commissioner of Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services, Andrew Warton.
“We all know that in an emergency, every minute counts, especially with a fast-moving event like a flash flood or a bushfire.”
“AusAlert will allow emergency services to issue alerts to impacted residents within minutes, with a message being sent to every compatible mobile device in a given area.”
