“This was a very difficult situation to manage, and our officers did a remarkable job to bring the prisoner under control and support their injured colleague,” A/g Ch Supt Wood said.

“Every day our officers deal with complex and challenging individuals, and this incident shows the challenges faced by officers every day.

“The way they were able to bring this highly volatile situation under control calmly and with no further injury to officers is an absolute testament not only to their training but also their absolute commitment to upholding the safety and security of our prisons, and the safety of their colleagues.

“We will provide the officers involved in this incident with every possible support, and I thank them for their service,” Ch Supt Wood said.
