Official launch of Boroondara Reconciliation Strategy 2022-26

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

In 2022, National Reconciliation Week ran from 27 May to 3 June 2022. We were proud to take a significant step in our reconciliation journey during this week by officially launching our Boroondara Reconciliation Strategy 2022-26 on Thursday 2 June.

Our Strategy helps to support our broader vision of ‘creating a community where the histories, cultures, knowledges, achievements and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are acknowledged, respected, considered and celebrated’. It features artwork by Lewis Wandin-Bursill, a local artist and proud young Wurundjeri man of the Woi-wurrung group. As an emerging artist, Lewis’ recent works have been informed by his interest in the traditional ways of his ancestors

Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elder, Uncle Colin Hunter opened our official launch event at Balwyn Community Centre with a Welcome to Country. We also enjoyed wonderful performances by Djirri Djirri Wurundjeri Women’s Dance Group and Yeng Gali Mullum, a singing and storytelling choir with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal volunteer members.

The catering was provided by Mabu Mabu, an Indigenous-owned and run business that specialises in using native ingredients and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Guests enjoyed treats like wattleseed chocolate caramel tarts and lemon myrtle cookie sandwiches.

It was fantastic to have so many community members join us to mark this occasion. We thank everyone for coming to show their support, with particular thanks to all the local stakeholders from the Aboriginal and Torres Islander sector who were instrumental in developing our Strategy.

We look forward to continuing to work together with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the broader Boroondara community as we progress reconciliation together.
