Older Tasmanians helping shape a respectful, age-friendly island

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government has taken an important step in supporting older Tasmanians, with the inaugural meeting of the Older Tasmanians Ministerial Advisory Council held today.

Minister for Ageing, Bridget Archer, said the Council will provide valuable advice and insights to help ensure the voices of older Tasmanians are reflected in Government policies, programs and services.

“Older Tasmanians make a significant contribution to our communities and our economy,” Minister Archer said.

“As Tasmania continues to have the oldest population in the nation, it is essential that we work closely with older people and organisations representing them to understand the opportunities and challenges associated with ageing.

“The establishment of the Older Tasmanians Ministerial Advisory Council demonstrates our commitment to listening to older Tasmanians and ensuring their perspectives help inform Government decision-making.”

Council Members include Peter Kearney OAM, Karen Oborn, Robin Thompson, Sajini Sumar and Janis McKenna, along with Council on the Ageing Tasmania CEO Brigid Wilkinson, One Care CEO Peter Williams, Relationships Australia (Tasmania) COO Mel Harback, along with representatives from the Departments of Health and Justice.

The Council brings together members with diverse expertise and experience from across Tasmania, including advocates, service providers, and community leaders.

The Council will play an important role in supporting the implementation of A Respectful, Age-Friendly Island: Older Tasmanians Action Plan 2025-2029, which outlines the Government’s vision for creating an inclusive Tasmania where people can age well, remain connected to their communities, and continue to contribute throughout later life.

“I look forward to working closely with Council members as we progress the priorities identified in the Action Plan and continue building a Tasmania where everyone can age with dignity, respect, and opportunity,” Minister Archer said.
