Today marks one year since the tragic events in Christchurch that claimed the lives of 51 innocent people and injured dozens more.
The Western Australian Government pays its respects to the victims, their families and all New Zealanders impacted by the attack – the worst act of terrorism in New Zealand’s history.
On the first anniversary of the horrific attack on a mosque and Islamic centre in Christchurch, Premier Mark McGowan urged Western Australians to continue to unite against hate and embrace our multicultural community which has played a key role in our State’s story.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
“Today marks one year since the horrific shooting in Christchurch that claimed the lives of so many innocent people.
“My thoughts are with the victims, their families and all New Zealanders today.
“This tragedy has deeply affected many Australians, who share a close affinity with New Zealand. We have all grieved with the people of New Zealand over this senseless loss of life.
“Western Australia is a proud multicultural society – our strength is in our diversity.
“Muslim Australians are a valued part of our community.
“Racism and hate have no place in our society and will not be tolerated.
“I recognise this is a hard time for many – we are here to support you. If you need help or support, please speak out.
“My Government will continue to work with community groups and leaders to ensure a safe, harmonious and happy society for all.”
