Ongoing tobacco fire investigation – three charged following Collingwood car theft

Three teenagers have been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of extortion incidents at various tobacco stores in the Yarra and Mentone areas.

Detectives from Yarra and Moorabbin crime investigation units executed search warrants at three properties on Tuesday morning where three teens were arrested.

A 17-year-old boy from the Broadmeadows area, and two boys, aged 17 and 15 from the Hume area were all interviewed and charged with theft of motor vehicle.

They were bailed to appear at a children’s court at a later date.

The charges relate to the alleged theft of a car in Collingwood on 19 June.

Police will investigate whether the vehicle was used in the series of offending.

The investigation into the series of extortion and fire incidents remains ongoing.

In particular, detectives are appealing for information regarding the firebombing on Lower Dandenong Road in Mentone on 30 June.

It is understood the business was rammed before being set alight about 4.10am.
