Open a book and dig deeper this Summer to win great prizes at Kingston Libraries

Kingston Libraries’ Summer Reading Club is back for another year encouraging children to read over summer and win some fantastic prizes. This years’ theme is Dig Deeper: read, discover, investigate.

Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said the annual club was a great way to keep children excited about reading during the school holidays.

“By continuing to read, children maintain their reading skills and literacy levels and avoid the common ‘summer slide’,” Cr Staikos said.

‘Summer slide’ refers to children dropping in their reading ability following a lack of reading over the summer break. Students often return to school in February with a lower reading level and interest in books than when they left in December.

“The Summer Reading Club is a terrific way to keep kids reading while not at school. By spending their Summer reading discovering and investigating with Kingston Libraries, your kids will be in a great position to start the new school year and be ready to take on new learning challenges,” said Cr Staikos.

Children simply need to read ten books or read for ten hours to enter the major prize draw. The more they read, the more chances to win. Prizes include LEGO®, a UE Wonderboom speaker, annual passes to Sea Life Melbourne, LEGOLAND® and Museums Victoria, a Strike Bowling voucher and a family movie experience. There are also book pack prizes to win just for borrowing from the library.

This year the program focuses on activities and challenges for participants to do at home – in their own time – such as take-home craft activities, local scavenger hunts, photography challenges, story writing and engaging online with inspiring author and adventurer Tim Cope.

The SRC Dig Deeper: read, discover, investigate runs from 1 December to 31 January and is for independent readers up to age 16. Children can sign up at any time over the two months.

The program is free to join, and participants will receive a themed tote bag with everything they need to get started plus a couple of surprises.

If you aren’t a library member don’t let that stop you from participating, visit your local branch and sign up online. Tote bags are limited so don’t leave it too long to join in. For more details visit kingston.vic.gov.au/library/src
