Opening ceremony on Saturday as Queensland gets ready for INAS Global Games

The final week countdown is on to the 2019 INAS Global Games, with around 1,000 athletes and supporters arriving in south-east Queensland ahead of the opening ceremony this weekend.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk encouraged the public to attend the Games launch in King George Square on Saturday 12 October.

“Held in Australia for the first time, the INAS Global Games will kick-off in style,” the Premier said.

“Free and open to members of the public, the opening ceremony will feature live music and an athletes’ welcome parade, keeping supporters entertained throughout the afternoon.

“I invite everyone to join the fun and help us cheer on athletes from 48 countries, including the largest team to compete – Team Australia.”

The 2019 INAS Global Games opening ceremony will be held in Brisbane’s King George Square from 4:00pm on Saturday, ahead of an official function at Brisbane City Hall.

Ms Palaszczuk said the Games were an opportunity for Queenslanders to watch gifted and inspiring athletes compete against the best in their field.

“Since the first Games for athletes with an intellectual impairment were held in Sweden three decades ago, the INAS Global Games has grown into a significant international sporting event.

“This is an extra special year for the Games, with athletes from China making their competition debut in our State and the Games offering a preview of what we might expect at next year’s Paralympics in Tokyo.

“In keeping with the theme of inclusivity, these Games are accessible and affordable, with 40 per cent of the schedule free, and tickets to paid events available for only $10 per sport, per day.

“With just days to go, now is the time to secure your tickets to the 2019 INAS Global Games.”

From 12-19 October, sports including athletics, swimming, rowing, basketball and cricket will be held at eight venues across south-east Queensland, including the Coomera Rowing Complex and the Queensland Sports and Athletic Centre.

The Queensland Government is a proud presenting partner of the 2019 INAS Global Games, providing more than $1 million of cash and in-kind support for the event.
