Operation Clean Up continues

Operation Clean Up is making good progress with 35% of kerbside pickups complete and over 21,000 tonnes of green waste removed since Boxing Day.

Mayor Tom Tate applauded the extraordinary work of City officers who have been working in challenging conditions to clean up the Gold Coast.

“Despite the rain, heat and strong winds we’ve experienced since Christmas, our 50 crews have been out and about every day,” Mayor Tate said.

“So far they have cleaned up 570 streets and 215km of roads.”

He said the crews are currently working through the scheduled household kerbside collection in Upper Coomera, Helensvale, Coombabah, Runaway Bay, Hollywell, Paradise Point and Hope Island.

People are reminded that there may be some large items like tree stumps left behind.

“They will be removed later with specialist equipment,” Mayor Tate said.

He also reminded residents that Operation Clean Up was for those impacted by the storms.

“Residents are reminded that this is a disaster recovery operation, not a general kerbside clean up.”

“The City’s focus is on the removal of storm debris, placing other items on the kerb slows our crews down and delays the response to highly impacted areas.”

City of Gold Coast CEO Tim Baker also applauded the efforts of the crews.

“We have had City officers on the tools since Boxing Day working weekends and public holidays.”

Operation Clean Up is a mammoth task that will take weeks, hundreds of crews, and thousands of hours to cut, load and remove storm and flood related debris from the Gold Coast.

“We thank the community for their ongoing support and patience as we continue to work through cleaning up the city.”

We encourage residents to go online to find information on the City’s plan to work through the huge task of removing green waste and storm debris.

The webpage includes a kerbside street finder tool so that residents can check if a residential kerbside collection has been scheduled in their street and how to prepare ahead of the pick-up date.
