It is with great pride that we share with you the 2023 Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) Annual Report.
Inside, you will find brilliant stories of discovery and impact in child health that reflect MCRI’s steadfast commitment to giving all children the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilled life.
Highlights from the year include identifying a biomarker that could predict children at risk of prolonged concussion, describing the developing immune system in unprecedented detail, and leveraging our global partnerships, expertise in AI and the power of big data to find solutions for the treatment of severe genetic disorders. We also announced a special five-year global health fellowship funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, honouring Professor Ruth Bishop AC and her enduring legacy.
Featured on this year’s cover is five-year-old Royal, who had a tiny brain malformation that led to severe daily epileptic fits. Our clinician-scientists used state-of-the-art technology, developed in-house, to find the cause of his seizures and to guide the best approach to brain surgery. Royal then underwent a very successful operation that allows him to now enjoy a happy and healthy childhood, seizure-free.
These accomplishments would not have been possible without the passion and generosity of people like you. Your support enables us to make meaningful changes for children and their families around the world, for which we are deeply grateful.
Please enjoy this year’s report and discover more about the life-changing difference you helped make in 2023.
