P-plate driver charged after pursuit with three children in car at Narrabri, NSW

A woman has been charged following a police pursuit with three children under seven in the car in the state’s north west.

About 9.30pm yesterday (Thursday 21 May 2020), officers from Oxley Police District attempted to stop a Mazda MPV travelling west on Yarrie Lake Road, Narrabri.

The vehicle allegedly failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.

Officers will allege in court that the vehicle reached speeds in excess of 170km/h in a marked 100km/h zone before it slowed down and pulled onto the shoulder of Yarrie Lake Road where a man was seen to jump out of the front passenger seat and run from police.

Shortly after, the vehicle was stopped on Bridge Street and the driver, a 32-year-old woman, was arrested.

Three children – a four-month-old girl and two boys, aged two and seven – were in the car at the time. The two-year-old was allegedly unrestrained.

The woman was taken to Narrabri Police Station and charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, P2 driver exceed speed more than 45kmh, and drive with child between 6 months and 4-years-old not restrained as prescribed.

She was refused bail to appear at Moree Local Court today (Friday 22 May 2020).

The children are in the care of relatives and a child at risk notification has been made.

Inquiries are continuing to locate the passenger.
