Progressive, positive and inclusive responses to racism will be examined at a Monash University-led panel discussion as a part of National Unity Week 2021.
The Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre’s (MMIC) event, Racism: It stops with…, will be led by Dr Susan Carland and include panelists Professor Jacinta Elston, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) and Emeritus Professor Andrew Markus from Monash University, along with Nyadol Nyuon, Chair of Harmony Alliance and Div Pillay, CEO of MindTribes.
National Unity Week is a partnership between Welcoming Australia and the Lebanese Muslim Association that encourages all Australians to join together and celebrate cultural diversity.
The initiative invites communities, organisations, businesses and social or sporting clubs to host interfaith or intercultural events that invite others to listen, learn, understand and build relationships between people of different faiths and cultures.
Now in its fifth year, National Unity Week will take place from Oct 22-30, 2021.
The Racism: It stops with… discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 27 from 6pm – 7.30pm online.
Panelists will discuss the extent of racism in Australia, the role of the media and politicians in tackling racism, the efficacy of diversity training programs and how schools and universities can play an important part in prevention.
They will also discuss how individuals can help tackle structural or systemic racism.
MMIC Director Professor Rebecca Wickes said eliminating racism and taking society forward as a whole aligned with Monash’s pledge to contribute to a better future.
“Our community is committed to addressing inequalities and shaping a world where people are put first,” Professor Wickes said.
“By hosting this event, we’re aiming to develop actionable solutions that enable and encourage every Australian to contribute to a better, more equal, kinder future.”
Dr Carland said she was looking forward to a robust and meaningful conversation.
