Passports data transfer issue

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

On 23 August 2022, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) identified a data transfer error that had caused incorrect photos or signatures to be printed on a small number of passports.

This was an isolated issue related to the migration of data from an older software system. It has not affected overall passport production output or processing times.

DFAT has investigated the issue and can confirm that fewer than 100 passports were impacted. The Australian Passport Office (APO) is contacting these customers to apologise for the error and arrange for a new passport to be delivered or collected.

The APO is contacting all affected customers. Anyone not contacted has not been impacted, and can travel on their passport.

DFAT takes customer privacy seriously. Personal information has not been disclosed as part of work to fix this issue.
