Northern Territory Police have arrested a 29-year-old man who had allegedly evaded police for several days following a stabbing in Darwin City.
At about 6.15pm on 27 August 2026, the man allegedly stabbed a female relative in the back at the Darwin Bus Interchange before fleeing the scene.
Police reviewed CCTV footage and conducted enquiries to locate the alleged offender, who was also wanted in relation to outstanding domestic violence offences.
Yesterday, general duties officers sighted the man in the Darwin CBD. He allegedly fled when challenged, and police established a cordon while officers searched the surrounding area.
Police Dog Drax and his handler located the man attempting to conceal himself behind buildings near a concrete wall and fence.
When challenged, the man allegedly attempted to climb the fence and escape. Despite repeated directions to stop and warnings that the police dog would be deployed, he continued trying to flee.
Police Dog Drax was deployed and apprehended the man, allowing officers to pull him from the fence and safely restrain him.
Police administered first aid at the scene before the man was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for assessment of an injury sustained to his groin during the arrest.
The man was subsequently charged with aggravated assault, armed with an offensive weapon and armed in public.
Officer in Charge of the Dog Operations Unit Acting Senior Sergeant Steven Dalrymple said the arrest followed a persistent effort by police to locate the man.
“This individual had been wanted by police for some time and allegedly chose to run again when officers located him.
“He was given repeated directions and ample opportunity to surrender peacefully but continued attempting to escape.
“Police Dog Drax and his handler played an important role in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion and preventing the man from evading police again.”
