Horsham Paws has received a grant from Horsham Rural City Council to assist in a subsidised desexing program for local animals.
The $5,000 contribution is part of Council’s 2023/24 Annual Community Grants.
“It’s wonderful to be a grant recipient,” Horsham Paws President Vicki Johnstone said.
“There are a lot of animals in our care and in the community that need to be desexed, especially cats.
“We’ve had two pregnant cats come through our doors already this year and a large amount of kittens, so the grant money will go a long way in preventing unwanted kittens.”
Mayor Robyn Gulline said that Council was delighted to support Horsham Paws and contribute to reducing the number of unwanted litters in the region.
“Desexing your animal reduces spraying, roaming and aggressive behaviors and prevents unwanted pregnancies,” she said.
“Our local animal rescues are already struggling with the large amount of animals that are rescued or surrendered to them.
“If we can stop the cycle and prevent litters, we can reduce the amount of animals that are waiting to be adopted.
“This money will go a long way in helping animals, their owners and the volunteers behind Horsham Paws who work tirelessly to save these animals and give them a second chance at life.”
