PCYC Napranum reeling in youngsters

PCYC Napranum’s Club and Culture program has proved to be a hit with the young people in the community.

Over the past six months, the program has been the busiest part of the day, with an average of 30 young people flocking to different activities that run over the afternoon.

They participate in a wide range of sports and activities including volleyball, basketball, AFL, fishing, cultural storytelling, arts, games and many more.

The program also allows participants to engage with a variety of service providers including Apunipima Cape York Health Council and Holyoake, who provide research-driven activities and sessions including healthy cooking classes, music classes and educational sessions.

As well as the Club and Culture program, PCYC Napranum also delivers programs such as Braking the Cycle, Night-time drop-ins, Equip the Kids, State Youth Leadership, Lead the Way and many more.

PCYC Napranum Youth Club Manager, Sergeant Rhonda Spence said connecting young people to their culture is one of the focal points of PCYC Napranums strategy.

“Because Napranum is an Aboriginal community, a lot of our programs revolve around building connection to culture for these young people, “she said.

“We focus on providing them with a broader understanding and appreciation of their culture by fostering participation in a diverse range of cultural experiences that develop their understanding, knowledge and connection to community.

“We also want to provide pathways for these young people, so offering state-wide programs such as Braking the Cycle, gives the kids the best chance of obtaining employment in the future.

“Seeing the positive change in these young people after leaving is the most rewarding thing, and the reason I do it.”
