Works are progressing at the Church Street and St Andrews Street intersection to complete the at-grade pedestrian crossings.
During these works, a road safety audit has identified ways we can further improve pedestrian safety. Over the next week we’re repositioning the fencing and bollards on St Andrews and Church Streets outside The Pantry, to ensure drivers have sight of pedestrians and vehicles are a safe distance from people crossing at the intersection.
Improving driver visibility of pedestrians, particularly children and wheelchair users, at this intersection will require removing the fence panelling, the existing fixed Council benches and ensuring the bollards near the intersection are at least 600mm from the kerb, as required by current Bayside pedestrian safety practices.
We’re also converting the car parking space outside 1 Church Street into a wider footpath area. This work has been deemed essential by the road safety audit, which identified a risk to pedestrians crossing Church Street from a car reversing from this space.
While Council understands that parking on Church Street is at times in very high demand, the recent installation of dynamic parking signs will direct motorists to the closest available parking spaces and help alleviate the frustration of finding a park in the popular shopping precinct.
Council has also created three new 15-minute parking spaces nearby at 10 St Andrews Street outside The Royale Brothers and at 25-27 Church Street outside Hellenic Republic to accommodate for takeaway/pick up during COVID-19 restrictions.
Council is working with The Pantry’s owner to ensure their permitted outdoor trading area, which is adjacent to this intersection, is not unduly impacted by these essential works.
