Permits to burn in Darwin region

The NTFRS would like to advise members of the public of their responsibility in relation to fires.

Permits to burn are NOT available at this time. Permits to burn in the Darwin Emergency Response Area, comprising of Darwin, Palmerston and Humpty Doo, ceased on Sunday 28 April 2019. They will recommence later in the year.

The public are advised that:

  • It is an offence to light a fire in the open air without a permit unless for the purpose of meal preparation or personal comfort (warmth/ living rough)
  • It is an offence to light any fire in the open on a total fire ban day
  • It is an offence not to try to extinguish an unlawful fire
  • It is an offence not to report an unlawful fire

Anyone caught lighting an illegal fire will be infringed a minimum of $620 plus $40 victim’s levy.

Anyone who witnesses or suspects unlawful burning is encouraged to contact the Fire Assistance Hotline on 89221555.
