Perth Lockdown Targets High-Risk Drivers

The WA Police Force conducted a targeted lockdown operation in Perth overnight on Saturday, 29 August 2026, targeting impaired drivers and other high-risk road behaviours that contribute to road trauma.

The Road Policing Command initiative involves an increased police presence, with high-visibility officers conducting intelligence-led enforcement in entertainment precincts during periods of increased activity, when alcohol consumption and illicit drug use may be more prevalent.

Between Saturday evening, 29 August 2026, and Sunday morning, 30 August 2026, a coordinated lockdown operation in and around the Perth CBD involved officers from Breath and Drug Operations, Road Policing Groups, Road Policing Motorcycles, Road Policing Investigations and Mobile Camera Operations. More than 9,000 drivers were tested for alcohol and drugs, while more than 31,000 drivers were monitored by mobile cameras.

The operation identified a concerning number of offences, including:

• 895 motorists speeding

• 22 motorists driving under the influence of alcohol

• 16 motorists driving an unregistered vehicle

• 13 motorists using a mobile phone while driving

• 8 motorists with illicit substances in their system

Commander Mike PETERS, Road Policing Command, said the results were a stark reminder that too many drivers continue to disregard the law and the potentially devastating consequences of their actions.

“The results of this operation are extremely disappointing.

“What is most concerning is that these are not minor lapses in judgement. These are behaviours we know contribute to serious crashes and deaths on our roads.

“Every person detected during this operation made a conscious decision to take a risk. Unfortunately, it is often innocent road users and their families who pay the price when those decisions end in tragedy.

“If you choose to drink drive, drug drive, speed or put other lives at risk, expect police to be there. We will continue to target dangerous drivers and hold them accountable before their actions have devastating consequences.”
