Perth Station lights up as part of CBD revitalisation

  • New coloured decorative lighting to illuminate Perth Station building
  • Lighting is part of a $2.5 million upgrade of the area, announced by the McGowan Government last year
  • Revitalisation of Perth Station forecourt area to improve safety and provide better connection between the city and Northbridge
  • Perth Station will be the latest city landmark under the spotlight, with new decorative lighting launching today (1 December) set to illuminate the building as part of a revitalisation project announced by the McGowan Government last year.

    The new lighting includes 30 new LED spotlights, 42 LED liner light bars, 140 metres of flexible LED strip and around 10,000 individual LED lights.

    The new lighting system can create any colour combination and currently has 80 preset scenarios.

    In November 2021, the McGowan Government announced a raft of measures to tackle antisocial behaviour and boost safety in the Perth central business district and Northbridge.

    One measure included a $2.5 million upgrade of the Perth train station forecourt which included improved lighting and pedestrian movement, and better connections to Yagan Square.

    The first stages of the project were completed in July and included increased lighting at the station entrance, new planters and landscaping.

    The new design aims to celebrate the landmark structure and its prominence in the streetscape, while also taking into consideration several other factors including:

    • The need for a fresh and updated look;
    • Seamless, secure and safe pedestrian connections;
    • A design that is reflective of the area and its history;
    • A way to showcase Perth’s central station; and
    • Improved vegetation more appropriate to the site.

    The next stage of the project will include the commissioning of artwork for the area.

    The Government has also developed a concept plan for feature lighting on the Narrows Bridge, which will add to the growing number of State assets lit up around the city.

    Pictures and video of the train station lighting are available here.

    As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

    “This is a fantastic new look for Perth Station that will add to the ongoing revitalisation of this part of our city.

    “Illuminating the station building will showcase this important landmark at the centre of the city, while complementing the existing changes to this area as part of the overall $2.5 million upgrade.

    “The changes will not only increase foot traffic, improve safety and enhance connections between Northbridge and the station, but will also help to welcome visitors to the city – especially now that the new Airport Line is open – by making a good first impression.”

    As stated by Perth MLA John Carey:

    “Our Government is investing in a wide range of measures to make our CBD a more attractive place for people to visit, and this new look for Perth Station is a way we are doing that.

    “The feature lighting gives this important city landmark a fresh look, and will be a fantastic statement for people using the train to access the CBD.”
