City of Darwin is reminding pet owners that all dogs and cats in the Darwin municipality must be registered by Tuesday 1 September 2026.
Pet registrations expire on 31 August each year, meaning owners need to make sure their registration is renewed by 1 September each year to remain current.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said registration was an important part of being a responsible pet owner.
“Pet owners need to ensure their dog or cat is registered for the year ahead as registrations expire on 31 August each year,” Mr Styles said.
“Keeping an unregistered dog or cat in Darwin is an offence, so I encourage anyone who has not yet renewed their registration to do it now.
“Registration also plays an important role in getting pets home. When a lost animal is found, having current information makes it easier to identify their family and get them reunited.
“If you have changed your address or phone number, or you have not received your renewal notice, please contact City of Darwin to check your information and make sure your pet’s registration is up to date,” he said.
Dogs and cats must be registered if they are older than three months or have been in the Darwin municipality for three months or longer.
