Western Australia is taking centre stage in global maritime safety and collaboration, with Pilbara Ports hosting the 2026 Safe Ships Safe Ports Forum this week.

The event will welcome more than 900 delegates from Australia and around the world for two days of discussion on collaboration, innovation, and leadership in maritime safety.

Day one of the forum provided the backdrop to confirm the delivery of a new Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system for the Port of Port Hedland.

Kongsberg Norcontrol Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to deliver the new VTS system, which will integrate radar, vessel tracking, communications, CCTV, weather, and ocean data to give operators a clear real-time picture of activity across port waters.

Launched in 2016, Safe Ships Safe Ports brings together industry leaders, regulators, port operators, seafarers, and maritime experts to share knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and advance this year’s theme: Strengthening maritime safety through collaboration, innovation and leadership.

As stated by Ports Minister Stephen Dawson:

“Safe Ships Safe Ports brings maritime experts together to share knowledge, drive innovation, and strengthen safety outcomes across the global maritime industry.

“The new Vessel Traffic Services system will ensure the Port of Port Hedland continues to be supported by modern, reliable technology that boosts safety and supports efficient port operations.

“Hosting Safe Ships Safe Ports is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Western Australia’s maritime leadership and world-class port operations to global industry leaders.

“Through investment in critical infrastructure and initiatives that bring industry together, the Cook Labor Government is keeping Western Australia’s ports safe, efficient and globally competitive.”
