Pilot In Making

A charity well known to ADF personnel, Legacy, recently held an auction for a flight in an F/A-18F flight simulator and the winning bidder has taken up the purchase.

Jacob Geary, a Brisbane student, was the lucky purchaser (well perhaps mum, Heather Geary, may have bid and given the winning bid to Jacob as a reward), and took up his winnings during April.

This is not Jacob’s first foray into the simulator world with military aircraft, having previously flown the KC-30A multi-role tanker transport simulator.

Hosted by 1 Training Flight, Jacob flew from Amberley to Moreton Bay and conducted activities over the bay before returning to Amberley without incident.

Mrs Geary has always felt it was important to support Legacy and has a keen awareness of its role, as her father was an Army veteran.

“It is important to support our veterans in this way and the ability to have fun at an auction for this experience just adds a fun element to supporting Legacy,” she said.

“Jake’s keen on being a pilot.”

Jacob, who has aspirations of perhaps flying the F-35A one day, was in good hands with Squadron Leader Red Borrman – a former F-35A pilot and one of the trainers on the day.

As Jacob exited the simulator following his flight he said, “it was good. Really good”.

Following his simulator flight, Jacob and Mrs Geary had a personal visit to the flight line and had a close look at a real F/A-18F.

Legacy Brisbane supports 4380 family members of fallen and injured veterans across south-east, central and western Queensland.
