Place Shapers – passion for public places

Place Shapers ILLUSTRATION

Do you have a great idea to enhance a local area and create a sense of identity and place, but not sure how to implement it?

The 2023 Place Shapers program aims to put community at the centre of creating public spaces in Nillumbik that people love and feel connected to.

It’s free to participate – all you need is a passion for making public spaces in Nillumbik that are green, comfortable, accessible, active and attractive, as well as two hours a week to attend the sessions.

The four-week program includes:

• Weekly facilitated workshops with experts and community leaders

• Placemaking and project support

• Coaching to develop your project idea.

Nillumbik Mayor, Ben Ramcharan said that the Place Shapers program had become an important part of Council’s commitment to community led place making.

“Place Shapers fosters social inclusion and connection and aligns with our Council Plan, as well as the Nillumbik Health and Wellbeing Plan,” Councillor Ramcharan said.

“Residents have approached me with great placemaking ideas in the past, including a community garden in Research, improved signage at Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park and greening up local spaces through weeding and planting.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what amazing projects grow out of the 2023 program.”

The Place Shapers program began as a pilot in 2021, with participant feedback highlighting its success:

“It was very comprehensive, organised, well-prepared, fun and useful! I learnt heaps about council processes, grant complexities and the amazing theory behind place making, which I never knew was a thing!”

“This was an amazing program and I am so grateful to have been a part of it!”

We encourage people with accessibility or other support needs to contact us to discuss how we can assist you to participate in the program, for example wheelchair access, large font size for printed documents, hard copies of program resources..

Expressions of interest close Friday 23 December.
