Plastic surgery now available at Rockingham General Hospital

  • New surgical service delivers patient care near home
  • Improved access to timely treatment for low to medium acuity patients
  • Service to include a plastics and wound care specialist nurse
  • Patients in the Rockingham-Peel region are set to benefit from a new plastic surgery service which has been established at Rockingham General Hospital.

Rockingham General Hospital will offer low to medium complexity surgery for patients requiring plastic surgery in the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) catchment, including a significant number of skin cancer surgeries.

The new service will assist in achieving more timely access to care for patients, and should reduce the overall SMHS plastic surgery outpatient and elective surgery waitlists.

As part of this new service, a plastics and wound care specialist nurse will provide advice to staff within the hospital regarding plastics patients and other patients requiring wound management.

The new service is in partnership with Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group who undertake the higher acuity cases within the south metropolitan catchment.

More complex surgeries will continue to be concentrated at Fiona Stanley Hospital, with Fremantle Hospital continuing to cover less complex cases.

The plastic surgery service commenced on January 31, 2019 and is anticipated to complete more than 500 surgeries in its first year.

As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:

“It is always beneficial for patients when they can be seen close to home. It reduces stress and anxiety, which can lead to a better recovery.

“The focus is always about providing the best experience for our patients. The new plastic surgery service is a great win for them, as we are now providing improved access to these services across the region.

“This is a great win for patients in the south metropolitan region and, in particular, people in the Rockingham and Peel area.”
