Another 27km of the Plenty Highway has been sealed through a joint investment by the Northern Territory and Australian governments.
The latest works bring the total length of dual-lane sealed road along the Plenty Highway to 155km.
The upgrades will improve safety, reliability and access for remote communities along the 499km highway linking the Stuart Highway with the Donohue Highway in Qld.
The Finocchiaro CLP and Albanese Labor governments have sealed another 27km of the Plenty Highway in Central Australia, improving access for remote communities and strengthening critical road infrastructure.
The newly sealed section extends from three kilometres west of the Plenty River to the Lucy Creek access road turn-off, including access to the Jervois Station Roadhouse.
Its completion brings the total length of dual-lane sealed road along the Plenty Highway to 155km.
The Plenty Highway is a 499km highway connecting the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory to the Donohue Highway at the Queensland border.
It forms a key part of the Outback Way, a 2,720km route connecting Laverton in Western Australia to Winton in Queensland via Alice Springs.
The 27km section forms part of the Plenty Highway project being delivered under the $217.5 million Outback Way Corridor Upgrade – NT project here.
The project is jointly funded, with the Australian Government contributing $174 million and the Northern Territory Government contributing $43.5 million.
The broader program will deliver safer and more reliable journeys by widening 80km of single-lane sections of the Plenty Highway to a dual-lane seal.
The works carried out by Aldebaran Contracting included:
Construction of a concrete causeway at the Plenty and Marshall River crossings at Bonya CreekRealignment of the Lucy Creek Mine intersection to improve safety for motoristsConstruction of four floodways and seven culvertsFormalising six intersections, including installing cattle grids at the Atula, Batton Hill, Marshall Rest Area, Jervois Homestead, Bonya and Lucy Creek Mine access roads.
The upgrades will improve accessibility to remote communities, increase road safety and strengthen flood immunity along the route.
The completed works will also deliver safer journeys and more reliable travel for freight and passenger vehicles using the Plenty Highway.
