Point to Point Speed Cameras Operational – Toowoomba Second Range Crossing

The point to point speed camera systems present on the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing will officially become operational from 2pm tomorrow, October 1.

The Toowoomba Second Range Crossing (Toowoomba Bypass) is a significant road corridor for Queensland and nationally with almost half of all exports from the Port of Brisbane originating from regions near to this bypass. Maintaining safety upon the bypass road is enhanced by the presence and enforcement undertaken from the point to point system, ensuring the safety of all road users whilst keeping this strategic link open to regional Queensland.

Point to point cameras have been proven worldwide to reduce road trauma along high crash risk locations and improve traffic flow through speed compliance to posted speed limits. These cameras operate by ‘timing’ a vehicle’s journey over a surveyed distance between two or more fixed points along a section of road. The camera system calculates the speed for that vehicle and compares the result to the posted speed limit. When a vehicle is recorded to be travelling more than the posted speed limit, the images will be adjudicated, and an infringement notice issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Point to point cameras enforce posted speed limits along sections of road for 24 hours each day. Drivers are notified of the presence of point to point cameras by advisory signs.

The Queensland Camera Detected Offence Program is focused on providing safer roads and safety for all road users. The Program is a key road safety initiative to reduce road trauma and is delivered by the Department of Transport and Main Roads with the Queensland Police Service. Site select for point to point cameras is based on either a history of crashes or the critical importance of the road.

The number of point to point cameras is increasing given their proven record in reducing road trauma and improving traffic flows. The Department of Transport and Main Roads with the Queensland Police Service are currently progressing the installation of more point to point camera systems. These will be installed at the Gateway Motorway and the M1 between Logan and the Gold Coast.
