Police appeal for information following incident in Waikato

As stated by Detective Inspector Kevin McNaughton:

Police can confirm the man shot by Police in Matamata-Piako yesterday was a 31-year-old from the Hauraki region.

He is known to Police and was shot after a lengthy pursuit ended with the man threatening a family at a rural address in Matamata-Piako.

We understand how unsettling incidents like this are for the community, and Police will continue to have an increased presence in Waikato and Matamata-Piako areas over the coming days.

Victim Support is working with the victims affected by this incident. The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified and a Critical Incident Investigation is under way.

Police are continuing to establish the sequence of what occurred, in an incident that spanned an area of more than 50 kilometres.

We believe members of the public can assist the investigation and we would like to hear from anyone who has video or photos of the vehicles involved.

The man initially travelled along Ulster Street, Hamilton driving a silver Mazda MPV into Wairere Drive, pursued by police.

Following a further incident in Wairere Drive, he took possession of a black BMW 120i and travelled east, continuing to be pursued by police.

The BMW was pursued into the Matamata-Piako Area where it crashed, on McLaren Road.

Motorists and residents are asked to review any imagery they may have from dashcam, CCTV or phones of the pursuit. We also want to hear from anyone who witnessed the events, even if they do not have footage of them.
