Police appeal for public assistance following sexual assault in Inverell

Detectives are appealing for public assistance following a sexual assault in the state’s north.

Police have been told a woman left a licenced premises on Byron Street, Inverell, about 12.15am yesterday (Sunday 30 December 2018).

The 21-year-old woman continued walking along Byron Street, over the bridge and into Lions Park, where she was struck in the head from behind and sexually assaulted.

The man stole money and other personal items before fleeing the scene on foot.

Officers from New England Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.

Detectives would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

He is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, of large build, about 183cm tall and may have a lisp.
