Police appeal for witnesses after serious assault

Major Crime detectives are appealing to the public for witnesses following a serious assault in Elizabeth Downs last month.

At about 11.30pm on Friday 22 April 2022, police and emergency services responded to an assault which occurred on Peacock Road, Elizabeth Downs. Upon arrival SAAS and police crews located a male who was unresponsive with significant head injuries. Police have since identified the victim as a 59-year old man from Elizabeth Downs. The victim remains in hospital in a serious condition and his injuries are no longer considered life threatening.

Detectives from Northern District and Major Crime Investigation Branch have conducted numerous lines of investigation identifying an initial incident occurring in the vicinity of 38 Peacock Road, Elizabeth Downs, before moving to a location 50m south on the same road. It was at this location, police will allege the victim was assaulted numerous times by his attacker who was armed with a golf club.

It is unclear if the suspect and victim knew each other, or what the motive was for the assault. However, further investigation has identified that after the assault, the suspect walked north along Atkinson Road, before heading west through an alleyway and then back on to Peacock Road. The suspect was last seen walking east on Campbell Road.

On Thursday 5 May 2022, police attended a Globe Derby address and arrested a 40-year-old man. He was charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass and attempted murder. The man appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court and has been remanded in custody until August 2022.

On Friday 6 May 2022, around 30 SAPOL and SES members conducted a search at Globe Derby Park. The area searched was bordered by Ryans Road, Whites Road, Daniel Street and a trotting track (see picture below). The purpose of the search was to locate any evidence which may relate to the assault. During the search a baseball cap was located however it is unclear if this item is related to the investigation.

Major Crime detectives are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed or heard the incident on 22 April, or who may have seen or heard suspicious activity in the days leading up to the assault to contact police. Police are further appealing for anyone who may have located a light coloured t-shirt with a black logo on the front, black pants, black shoes or a black baseball cap in or around Globe Derby Park to please come forward.

Police are continuing to search for a golf club suspected to be used in the assault, similar to the one pictured, and ask anyone who may have located this item in the Globe Derby Park to contact police.

Police are also encouraging anyone who may have been in the following locations from 9.45pm until midnight on Friday 22 April, and may have CCTV or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
