Police are urging drivers to pay attention following crash on Huon Highway

Police are urging drivers to slow down and pay attention after a crash on the Huon Highway at Franklin recently that could have had a tragic outcome.

“A 19-year-old man from Franklin – who is the holder of a P2 licence – is being proceeded against for negligent driving following a crash at Franklin last week that could have had a tragic outcome,” said Inspector Colin Riley.

“Around 4pm last Thursday (23 May), police responded to reports of a crash on the Huon Highway, heading towards Castle Forbes Bay, where a Ford Falcon ute had rolled.”

“With the assistance of dashcam footage from the public, police have determined the driver of the ute overtook dangerously in wet conditions; striking the vehicle he was following and narrowly avoiding an oncoming truck; before losing control and rolling his vehicle.”

“Luckily, no injuries were sustained in the crash.”

“When you add wet roads and reduced visibility to driver inexperience, the outcome of this crash could have been fatal.”

“Unfortunately, provisional drivers are overrepresented in serious and fatal crashes on our roads.”

“I urge all motorists, especially provisional drivers, to slow down and pay attention on the roads – we want everyone to get to their destination safely.”
