Police arrest man after police officer assaulted; firearms and ammunition located in Belrose

A man is in custody after firearms and ammunition were located at a house fire, and a police officer was assaulted in the Northern Beaches today.

About 12.15pm (Monday 17 August 2020), officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command were called to assist the NSW Rural Fire Service at a house fire on Hilversum Crescent, Belrose, after reports the resident was being uncooperative.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, which caused damage to the carport and its contents.

Police arrived and located ammunition amongst other items in the carport, and two firearms nearby. They have been seized and a crime scene has been established.

When officers spoke to the occupant, he became agitated and allegedly punched a male probationary constable in the face. The officer was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The 54-year-old man resisted officers and a taser was deployed. He was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station.
