Police arrest man after police operation in Northmead

A man is in custody after a police operation in Sydney’s north west this morning.

About 4.40am (Sunday 29 March 2020), police were called to Windsor Road, at the James Ruse Drive overpass at Northmead, following reports a man had stopped his utility in traffic.

Officers from The Hills Police Area Command attended and spoke to the man who indicted he had an explosive device.

A perimeter was established with specialist police resources – including the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, the Tactical Operations Unit and negotiators – called to assist.

After negotiators spoke to the man, he surrendered and was arrested without further incident about 9am.

The 50-year-old man has been taken to Castle Hill Police Station, where he has been checked by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

A crime scene has been established as inquiries continue.

A number of items have been seized from the scene; however, initial examinations indicate these are not explosives.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
