Police arrest man after puppy set alight in Lurnea

A man has been arrested after a puppy was deliberately set alight at a unit in Sydney’s south-west today.

Just after 3.20am (Friday 14 May 2021), emergency services were called to a unit on Wonga Road, Lurnea, after reports of a unit fire.

Officers from Liverpool City Police Area Command attended, along with Fire and Rescue NSW.

The blaze, which had caused significant damage to the unit, was extinguished.

A six-month old puppy was found in a cage on the balcony, suffering severe burns after allegedly being set alight. The puppy was subsequently humanly euthanised by police.

The occupant, a 39-year-old man was arrested and taken to Liverpool Police Station.

Neighbours had evacuated prior to the attendance of emergency services and there have been no further reports of injuries

A crime scene has been established as inquiries continue.
