Police arrest man after violent struggle with police in Newton, QLD

Toowoomba police have arrested a man after a firearm was discharged as officers were attempting to arrest him at Newtown this morning.

Around 11am uniformed officers from Toowoomba were patrolling in the Newtown area when they conducted a walk-through of a Bridge Street hotel.

It will be alleged as two officers were speaking to a male patron in the gaming area he became aggressive and started struggling with them.

During the struggle the man allegedly produced a firearm which discharged once. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The man was taken into custody after a violent struggle and the deployment of OC spray and a taser.

It is further alleged the man further threatened police and patrons with a knife.

A man and woman who were at the venue with the man fled in a vehicle once the disturbance began.

Police conducted searches in the area for the pair and were unable to locate them. Police are appealing for them to contact Darling Downs detectives.

The man has been transported to hospital for treatment to medical related issues.

Police investigations are continuing.
