Detectives from the Armed Crime Squad are investigating following a series of incidents in Melbourne’s north-west suburbs early this morning.
Police were initially called in relation to an incident at a Sunbury supermarket just before 3.50am where a dark coloured Nissan Navara was seen towing an ATM away from the store.
A report was then received just after 4.40am of a break in at a supermarket in Westmeadows, where it appeared equipment including a truck, trailer and bobcat were left inside the store.
The Broadmeadows divisional van was on patrol when it was rammed at the intersection of Providence Road and Felix Lane, Greenvale just after 4.40am.
It’s believed a dark coloured Nissan Navara was involved in the ramming and that vehicle has left the scene following the incident.
The circumstances leading up to the ramming are still to be determined.
Two Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers heard the ramming incident over the police radio and responded to check on the welfare of the Victoria Police officers.
Neither of the police officers involved in the ramming were physically injured.
The AFP officers subsequently attended a suspect vehicle at the intersection of Providence Road and Section Road, Greenvale shortly after 4.50am.
As they approached the vehicle to speak to the occupants they were fired upon.
One of the AFP officers subsequently discharged his firearm, striking one of the men at the vehicle.
Both men were taken into custody and a firearm was seized.
The injured man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and remains under police guard.
The second man also remains in Victoria Police custody.
A dark coloured Nissan Navara has been located burned out on Elphingstone Street, Greenvale and at this stage investigators believe this vehicle is likely to be linked to the previous burglaries and ramming.
Police are still working to establish if further offenders were involved in those incidents.
The investigation by the Armed Crime Squad remains on going and detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incidents or has further knowledge of those involved to come forward.
They are also keen to speak to anyone who may have CCTV or dash-cam footage of the incidents.
As per standard protocols for any matter where an AFP officer discharges a firearm, AFP Professional Standards (PRS) will compile a Critical Incident Report for the AFP.
