Northland Police investigating the theft of a church bell in Rawene are seeking the community’s assistance for its safe return.
The bronze bell is believed to have been stolen from the Parnell Street church sometime between 15 and 22 July.
Far North Area Commander, Inspector John Fagan, says the bell was housed in its own small shelter to the left of the St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church’s front entrance.
“The church building itself was locked and secure at the time of the theft.
“This is a substantial and distinctive item, measuring more than half a metre in height and diameter.
“It’s likely the removal would have required considerable effort and the use of a vehicle.”
Inspector Fagan says the bell was discovered missing on 22 July when a member attempted to ring it, only to find it had gone.
“We are asking anyone currently in possession of the bell to please make arrangements for its safe return to the church.
“The congregation hopes this treasured community item can be returned without further damage or loss.”
Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity around St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church between 15 and 22 July, or who has information regarding the bell’s whereabouts, to contact us.
