Police charge driver over serious crash in Riverina

A man has been charged after allegedly fleeing the scene of a serious crash in the state’s Riverina region earlier this week.

About 1am on Wednesday (11 January 2023), emergency services were called to near the intersection of the Goldfields Way and Thanowring Road, Temora, following reports of a crash.

Police have been told a sedan and a utility were travelling north along the Goldfields Way, when the utility left the roadway and rolled several times.

A female passenger in the backseat of the utility, aged 24, was ejected from the vehicle, while the male front seat passenger, aged in his 40s, suffered leg and head injuries.

Both were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The male drivers of both vehicles allegedly fled the scene, with the sedan located soon after on Gardner Street, Temora.

Officers from Riverina Police District established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Following inquiries, police attended a home on Thom Street, Temora, and arrested a 19-year-old man, about 12pm yesterday (Thursday 12 January 2023)

He was taken to Temora Police Station where he was charged with six offences:

  • Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous (two counts)
  • Fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm
  • Cause bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle
  • Predatory driving
  • Learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester.

The man was refused bail to appear before Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Friday 13 January 2023).
