Police charge man after 1996 St Albans sexual assault

Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad have today charged a man as part of their investigation into the 1996 sexual assault of a woman in St Albans.

A 47-year-old Mount Macedon man was arrested at his property early this morning.

He was subsequently interviewed by police and has been charged with rape (x2) and aggravated burglary.

The man will appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court shortly.

The arrest follows in an incident at an Evergreen Avenue property in St Albans about 5.10am on 23 July, 1996.

A 39-year-old woman, who is now deceased, was alone in the property at the time.

It’s alleged a man broke into the house and sexually assaulted her.
