Police charge man after assault at Port Macquarie

Police have charged a man following an assault in Port Macquarie overnight.

About 1.45am today (Sunday 19 November 2023), emergency services were called to Clarence Street, Port Macquarie, following reports of an assault.

Officers attached to Mid North Coast Police District arrived to find a 40-year-old man with multiple injuries to his legs, arms and head.

He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police arrested a 29-year-old man and seized a hammer and balaclava at the scene for forensic examination.

He was taken to Port Macquarie Police Station where he was charged with face blackened or disguised with intention to commit indictable offence, use offensive weapon with intention to commit indictable offence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and stalk intimidate intend fear physical harm.

Police will allege in court the 29-year-old man had threatened the 40-year-old man earlier in the night before returning and assaulting him with a hammer. Police will also allege they did not know each other.

The 29-year-old man was refused bail to appear before Port Macquarie Local Court on Monday 20 November 2023.
