Police charge man after assaulting probationary constable in Riverwood

A man will appear in court today after allegedly assaulting a probationary constable during an arrest yesterday.

About 11.45pm on Saturday (31 August 2019), police were called to a licensed premises on Josephine Street, Riverwood, following reports a man was involved in a confrontation with bar staff, where he allegedly poured a beer over a woman and smashed a glass over a man’s head, before fleeing the scene.

Officers from St George Police Area Command attended and commenced an investigation.

Just before 5pm yesterday (Sunday 1 September 2019), police were called back to the premises after reports the man had returned.

Upon arrival, the man sighted police and a foot pursuit commenced through the hotel and into the rear carpark, where a male probationary constable stopped him.

While the man was resisting arrest, police will allege he removed the OC Spray from the officer’s vest and deployed it towards him. A member of the public assisted in detaining the 24-year-old man before he was arrested.

He was taken to Kogarah Police Station and charged with common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, resist arrest, assault police, posses/use prohibited weapon, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, two counts of breach ADVO and breach of bail.

The man was refused bail to appear before Sutherland Local Court today (Monday 2 September 2019).

The probationary constable was decontaminated and did not require treatment.
