Police charge man after dog dies during house fire in Merrylands

A man has been charged after a dog died following a house fire in Merrylands last week.

About 10pm on Friday 18 February 2022, emergency services were called to a home on Crossland Street, Merrylands, following reports of a house fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW officers extinguished the blaze a short time later; however, extensive damage was caused to the premises.

The resident of the house was not at the location at the time of the fire; however, a dog was located deceased inside the premises.

Officers attached to Cumberland Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene, which was forensically examined.

Following inquiries, about 8pm yesterday (Sunday 20 February 2022), a 30-year-old man was arrested in South Granville.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment before being taken to Granville Police Station, where he was charged with damage property by fire/explosion > $15000 and commit an act of cruelty upon an animal.

The man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Monday 21 February 2022).
