Police charge man after evade

Detectives from Darebin Crime Investigation Unit have charged a man following an alleged evade and collision which occurred in Preston this morning (18/9).

A man was seen sleeping in an allegedly stolen Volvo bearing stolen plates in Collins Street, Preston about 8.10am.

Police attempted to arrest the driver who woke up and drove the car from the scene before police could get to the vehicle.

The vehicle was monitored by police to St Albans where it allegedly collided with a Toyota Camry station wagon on Main Road East.

The offending driver fled from the collision scene.

A man was arrested in a grocery store on Alfreda Street a short time later.

A 22-year old man of no fixed address was interviewed by police and charged with theft of motor car, theft from motor car, reckless conduct, drive in manner dangerous, speed dangerous, unlicenced driving, obtain property by deception, theft and other traffic offences.

He will face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court shortly.
