A man will face court today charged following a fatal crash near Greta on Monday.
About 8.50am (Monday 20 July 2026), emergency services were called to the New England Highway at Harpers Hill, following reports of a crash.
At the scene, police were told a hatchback and utility had crashed head on, blocking both directions of traffic.
The 75-year-old driver of the hatchback was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, she was unable to be revived.
The driver of the utility, a 21-year-old man, allegedly left the scene on foot.
The man was arrested nearby a short time later and taken to the John Hunter Hospital for assessment and mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established by officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District.
An investigation commenced by the Crash Investigation Unit who forensically examined the scene.
Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 21 July 2026), police attended hospital and spoke with the driver.
He was charged with five offences,
- Dangerous driving occasioning death
- Negligent driving (occasioning death)
- Negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm)
- Fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, and
- Not keep left of dividing line.
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today (Wednesday 22 July 2026).
