Police charge man after imitation firearm located by CIRT

A man has been arrested after a series of incidents across the south-eastern suburbs on New Year’s Day.

Critical Incident Response Team officers arrested the man at the corner of Whitehorse and Elgar roads in Box Hill, after receiving several reports that a man was allegedly armed with a firearm about 10.20pm.

Police will allege a bottle shop in Brighton was robbed of cigarettes.

They will also allege the accused man threatened a woman in Gardenvale before threatening a man and stealing his van shortly after.

CIRT with assistance of the Airwing and local police moved in and arrested the man in Box Hill. A search of the stolen vehicle uncovered an imitation firearm.

The man has been charged with: –

• Aggravated carjacking

• Attempted aggravated carjacking

• Robbery

• Prohibited person possess firearm

• Drive while disqualified

• Common law assault

• Assault with a weapon

• Reckless conduct endangering a person

• Dangerous driving whilst being pursued by police

• Damaging an emergency services vehicle

Reckless exposing an emergency worker to risk by driving

The man, of no fixed place of abode, was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on 3 January.
