Mernda Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have charged a 43-year-old man following a sexual assault in Northcote last week.
It is alleged a woman was picked up by an unknown man on Smith Street in Collingwood about 1.35am on Friday 18 February.
The victim got out of the vehicle in Northcote and the male driver sexually assaulted her.
He then drove away, and the victim reported the matter to police.
A Roxburgh Park man has been charged with rape and abduction.
He will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
