Police charge man after starting fire during ban in Schofields

Police have charged a man after he allegedly set alight two metal drums filled with plastic during a total fire ban in Sydney’s west this morning.

About 10.45am (Friday 10 January 2020), police were called to a property on Pelican Road in Schofields.

Upon arrival at the property, officers from Quakers Hill Police Area Command saw the drums on fire, as well as evidence of previously uncontained fires.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze and were concerned several fires had allegedly been lit at the property over the past six weeks, posing a risk to the public.

A 40-year-old man was arrested by police and taken to Riverstone Police Station, where he was charged with fail to comply with total fire ban order.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Blacktown Local Court on Monday 3 February 2020.
