Police charge man after Wonga Park attempted armed robbery

Manningham Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following an alleged attempted armed robbery in Wonga Park yesterday afternoon.

It is alleged two men entered a shop on Yarra Road armed with a weapon about 3pm.

The pair allegedly fled empty handed in a blue Ford Falcon.

A short time later, the vehicle allegedly collided with a white Nissan Patrol on Homestead Road.

The driver of the Nissan Patrol was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Falcon, a 22-year-old Boronia man, died at the scene.

His passenger, a 25-year-old South Yarra man, was taken to hospital and later interviewed by detectives.

He was charged with attempted armed robbery, handling stolen goods, drug possession and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail.

He will appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
