Police charge man over toilet fire at Albury

A man will appear in court today charged after a toilet was allegedly set alight in Albury on the weekend.

About 12pm Saturday (9 October 2023), emergency services were called to a shopping centre on Griffith Road, Lavington, following reports a disabled toilet was on fire.

Officers attached to Murray River Police District arrived to find the toilet well alight.

The centre was evacuated, and the blaze was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW.

No injuries were reported.

A crime scene was established and investigation into the cause of the fire was commenced.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 20-year-old man at Albury Hospital on Saturday.

He was taken to Albury Police Station where he was charged with damage property by fire or explosion more than $15,000.

The man appeared at Wagga Wagga Local Court yesterday (Sunday 8 October 2023) where he was formally refused bail to appear before Albury Local Court today (Monday 9 October 2023).
