Police charge man with arson and petrol theft, South Australia

A man has been charged with multiple offences including arson after allegedly torching a car at Salisbury East overnight.

A Nissan ute was set alight in the front yard of a house in Arndell Road, Salisbury East just before 1am on Friday 22 November.

Nearby residents contacted the MFS and police. When patrols stopped and spoke to the occupants of a ute in the car park of a fast food outlet on Saints Road nearby, a passenger ran from the car.

Officers allegedly located a lighter and jerry can in the vehicle, along with the registration plates from the torched ute.

Further investigation revealed the torched ute had been involved in a petrol drive-off from a service station at Salisbury Park just before 12.30am.

The driver, a 31-year-old Elizabeth Grove man, was arrested and charged with arson, illegal use and five counts of making off without payment that have occurred in the past week.

He was refused police bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court today.
